BDSM & Bondage Safety Tips

  • Safety is always important when you are taking part in bondage activities. It is vital that you study techniques carefully before attempting them with a partner. This study can take several forms. You can attend local fetish functions where demonstrations and lessons are given. You can study books and videos that teach you techniques and safety. Practice knots before you try them on your partner so that the two of you will have a smooth scene. I have some other safety tips that are must follows when you enjoy your bondage time.

  • Always use a safe word. Even if you do not intend on doing any other activity with your bondage, a safe word is important for the bound partner, bottom, to have. It should be a unique word that would not be uttered otherwise in your scene. If the safe word is used, all play stops and the situation is addressed. The safe word can be used to pause a scene so that bonds can be fixed if they become too tight or some other simple but important matter can be seen to. It can also be used to end the scene if the bottom has reached a limit or cannot go on for any reason.

  • Never bind your partner too tightly. When you are binding wrists and ankles, you should be able to slip your index finger under the bonds. If you are using Bondage Tape for full limb or body bondage, you should never bind too tightly. Even loose bonds will restrict motion. It is important that your partner be able to breathe easily when bound. Asphyxiation is a risk in bondage and you should take no action to increase that risk. Panic if breathing is restricted can also be dangerous. When binding, watch fingers and toes to ensure no discoloration appears and have your partner alert you if he or she begins feeling any tingling, numbness, or cooling.

  • Remember that restraint positions can affect circulation. Study different positions, paying attention to how circulation is affected. Remember that loose bonds, once you have your partner in a restraint system, can become tightened by tension.

  • Keep safety sheers on hand any time you are practicing bondage activities. The shears should be sharp enough to cut rope and should not have a point. If your partner is in distress, you do not want to risk poking him or her while trying to cut bonds.

  • Always discuss what you want to do with your partner before you begin the bondage activity. If you have things you want him or her to do to you, or you want to do to him or her, talk about it. Once he or she is bound, is not the time to spring a want or surprise. For the bottom, the mental stimulation that comes from bondage is built in part on trust. It is vital as the Top that you do nothing that would break that trust and only build it. Set your limits of what is and is not allowed, and respect those limits.

  • Above all, enjoy your bondage fun. You can receive so much release from this activity, both from the Top and bottom perspectives. As someone who enjoys both sides of bondage, being both Top and bottom can have its rewards. Talk to your partner, set your limits, and have fun exploring.

No matter the scenario, whether engaged in BDSM play or simply because of all the stories you’ve heard, pain is never what you want. Pain is the body’s way of letting you know something is not right. Anal play is not meant to hurt and any indication otherwise only means you need to slow down, take more time to warm up or try again when you are perhaps not so nervous or feeling pressured.

Never let anyone tell you that pain is part of the process! Put your foot down or you and your tender tushie may be making a break for the emergency room!

This rule goes the same for blood. Your skin is much thinner there than it is even inside the vagina so must be gentle. This does not mean that you cannot take a good, rough pounding, mind you.

Be advised that the beaded versions using regular fabric string instead of silicone or coated strings are one time use only toys! They cannot be adequately cleaned and can cause serious infection! Never reuse these.

When you are fully warmed up you can take a proverbial beating and in fact it can often lead to anal orgasms, which feel quite different, from penile, clitoral, vaginal or G-spot orgasms and are often quite powerful and highly enjoyable and sexy roughness once warmed up is not unsafe in and of itself so if there’s no red flags then pound away!

Remember beginners: slow and gentle to start, using lots of lubrication and just relax. Your body will acquiesce to your request if you’re not rushing to reach your conclusion, listen to your body and in are the right frame of mind.

There’s no shame in this and it’s certainly okay to have fun with bondage play and BDSM toys. Dig in and blow your mind!
